Are Off-The-Rack Cheap and Discount Bridesmaid Dresses Better?

My sister is planning her wedding to take place in the early fall of this year.  If you have ever planned a wedding, you know how much planning there is to do, from the basics of choosing colors, to the intricate details of selecting fabrics for bridesmaid dresses, whether they are discount bridesmaid dresses or not.

I asked my sister recently about how her wedding planning is progressing.  She has chosen to go with brown and pink as her wedding colors.  These colors seem very suitable to her and are a welcome reprieve from more traditional colors that seem to often be chosen.  She will likely choose a wedding dress with some well-placed embroidery of brown and or pink flowers over the background of white.  From some of the photos she’s shared, the effect should end up being quite breathtaking.

The next step will be to choose the wardrobe for the bridal party.  Since I will be included, the most exciting part for me will be selecting bridesmaid dresses.  My sister will likely have a group of friends stand up for her.  We’ve talked about it before, and along with our other sister and me, she will likely ask a couple of other friends to participate as well.

While we were talking she went into some detail about her vision for the bridesmaid dresses.  She is thinking of having them made in a shiny brown material with an empire waistline.  Along the waistline there will be some ribbing, possibly in a velvet material in the particular shade of pink that she’s chosen.  The bridesmaid dresses will be floor length with flowing skirts and will be sleeveless.  Chiffon scarves will be worn by all the girls in complementing colors to complete the effect.

At first, my sister had intended to buy off-the-rack discount bridesmaid dresses, thinking that this would cut back on the bother and expense involved.  However, with so many people being in the bridal party it’s very difficult to select one style of bridesmaid dress that will please the tastes of everyone involved. Seldom does one style suit all manner of body shapes, heights and serve to highlight the best features, while downplaying less flattering areas.

So, she’s realized that choosing fabric and having these dresses made is likely her best bet, even though they won’t be really cheap bridesmaid dresses.  She plans for the bridesmaid dresses to all be very similar.  However, she is open to slight variations to each dress, according to the preferences of each girl who actually has to wear them.  This is really an important consideration.

I think this approach is very considerate, reasonable and will make for the best end result. I’ve been involved in weddings in the past where the bride was an absolute dictator, with no consideration for the feelings, likes and dislikes of those supporting her by being a part of the bridal party.  This only served to create an atmosphere of hurt feelings and animosity. The bridesmaid dresses that this particular bride insisted on being worn turned out to be very unflattering and downright ugly.  Therefore, the resulting pictures left for much to be desired in these cheap bridesmaid dresses.
